Best Practices for Discussion Board Design Follow
This guide is designed to help moderators navigate Fuel Cycle's Discussion Board research tool for all potential activity types.
Tone
Ensure your welcome/introduction message and tone match the audience. For B2B, set a more professional tone. When speaking directly with customers, you can set a more casual, friendly tone.
Setup
Ensure each discussion board activity focuses on no more than one central topic. To explore multiple topics, create separate discussion boards for each topic.
- Introduce the topic by setting the context.
- For exploratory questions, share a universal truth or observation to gain alignment around a topic. (i.e. We all know that choosing the right [product] involves a balance of various factors. From [factor 1] to [factor 2], the decision-making process can be difficult! Please walk through an example of the last time you selected a [product].)
- For refinement-based activities, introduce the stimulus (sharing video or images where possible), provide context as to what stage of development it is currently at, and share where it might be shown in the market
- If applicable, share instructions on potential rewards or compensation for engagement at the top of the post.
- Within a board post, condense into one key question, if possible. Do not exceed more than 4-5 separate questions or sub-questions, as respondents are likely to only answer the first 2-3 questions and increased moderation will be necessary to ensure all questions are answered, and some may be missed. When multiple questions are included, format each question in individual bullets for clarity.
- Share specific instructions and invite members to engage in each other’s posts, if relevant.
Timing
If possible, release activities on a regular cadence and set a day so members know when to expect questions and engage.
