Sharing Executable Files
Sharing an unpackaged executable file from Google Drive with community members is not advisable for several reasons:
- Security Concerns—Many users (rightfully) won't trust an EXE file from an unverified source due to the potential for malware or viruses. Even if your file is safe, Google Drive (and antivirus software) might flag it as potentially harmful, resulting in download restrictions or warnings.
- Google Drive Blocking & Warnings—Google frequently restricts the direct download of EXE files, displaying notifications such as "Google Drive can't scan this file for viruses." Additionally, some users may be unable to download these files due to security policies implemented on their systems or networks.
- Delivery/Trust Issues—Many email providers and messaging platforms block links to EXE files, which complicates access for community members. Users may also be reluctant to run an EXE file from an unofficial source, resulting in low adoption of your software.
While we have no reason to believe anyone would maliciously upload dangerous executables, allowing them still introduces unnecessary risk. EXE files can contain malware and are system-dependent, meaning they won’t work across all devices.
If you need to share an executable, you should consult your personal security team to determine the best way to do so based on their recommendations. This ensures a safer, more reliable experience for everyone.
