Overview
Use Segments to visualize, filter, and explore profile data across your community — and save reusable audience views for ongoing analysis.
What are Segments?
Segments is an audience management tool that lets you create reusable, filtered views of your community members based on profile (P2) data. Unlike static lists, Segments save both the participant attributes you've selected and the filters you've applied — making it easy to return to and analyze the same audience over time without rebuilding your setup from scratch.
Why use Segments?
Segments provide a more flexible way to explore and organize participant data. Teams can quickly identify target audiences, save commonly used views, and maintain consistency across analyses without needing to recreate filters each time. Key capabilities include:
- Reusable audience views — Save selected attributes and active filters so you can return to the same audience view at any time.
- Flexible filtering — Apply and refine filters through the filter panel or directly from column headers to narrow your audience quickly.
- Team-wide visibility — Segments created by any community moderator are visible to the entire team, supporting consistent analysis across your organization.
- Export for deeper analysis — Download your filtered segment as an Excel file, including only the columns and audience members currently in view.
Accessing Segments
Click Segments in the left navigation bar. The Segments page displays all active segments, showing the segment name, creation date, status, and type. Use the search bar or status filter to locate a specific segment. To explore an existing segment, click its name to open the member profiling data and filters already configured for that group.
Creating a New Segment
- Click + Create Segment in the top-right corner of the Segments page.
- Enter a name in the Segment Name field. You can change this later using the pencil icon inside the segment builder.
- Click Next to proceed to the segment builder.
Adding and Managing Columns
When you first enter a new segment, the page will show a "No columns selected" message. Use the Manage Columns panel to choose which P2 data points to display.
- Click Manage Columns — either from the center of the blank page or from the toolbar. The panel opens on the right side of the screen.
- In the Available tab, check the box next to each P2 point you want to include. Use the search bar to find specific attributes, or use Select All / Clear All as shortcuts.
- Switch to the Visible tab to reorder your selected columns. Drag columns into your preferred display order using the six-dot handle on the left of each row.
- Click Update to apply your selections. The segment will populate with each member's username and the P2 data for the columns you've chosen.
For P2 points that allow multiple selections, all of a member's responses will appear together in a single column.
Filtering Your Segment
- Click Filters in the segment toolbar to open the Filters panel.
- Each P2 point in your segment appears with a dropdown of available answer choices. Check or uncheck values to include or exclude members from your view. Use the search bar or Select All / Clear All shortcuts as needed.
- Click Update to apply your filters. The segment will refresh to show only members who meet all active filter criteria.
To remove all filters and return to the full segment view, click Clear Filters in the toolbar.
Saving and Updating a Segment
Click Update Segment in the top-right corner to save the current column configuration, column order, active filters, and segment name as the default view. The next time you or another moderator opens the segment, it will open in this saved state.
Any time you make changes to columns or filters, click Update Segment again to save the latest configuration. Changes are not automatically saved.
Exporting a Segment
- Click Export in the segment toolbar.
- Once the file is ready, you will receive a notification in the platform's notification center.
- Open the notification center and click the download link to retrieve your Excel file.
The export includes only the columns currently visible and only the members who match any active filters. To export the full unfiltered segment, clear your filters before exporting.
Once created, segments can be revisited, modified, and exported at any time — making them a practical tool for ongoing audience analysis, reporting, and research planning.
